Kula⁴: Schuyler x Nikki x Yoga x Surf = Exponential Delight

at Boca Sombrero (Osa Peninsula
Costa Rica Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica )

It’s been 10 years since Kula's two mamas have co-led a retreat in the Osa. It’s been a decade of many changes, but what hasn’t changed is their shared love for this particular spot on the planet. Both Kula Flow and the Osa Peninisula have captured their hearts for life—and make a most potent mix for a week-long winter foray.

If you've been in Kula's orbit for any amount of time you've surely heard about (if not been to—perhaps multiple times) the epic Osa Peninsula. And Boca Sombrero Surf & Yoga is our kula away from Kula: a rustic eco retreat center situated on a private surf break with a gorgeous open air yoga deck, a swimming pool, plenty of space to chill, and a range of lodging options to fit all tastes and budgets.

You will be awoken to a spectacular sunrise by the jungle alarm clock—howler monkeys at 6am—for the first surf session or yoga class of the day. (Not to worry, they DO serve coffee). We schedule our two daily yoga classes to fit the tides, but every day there will be a strong Kula Flow class and a mellower Honey Flow. (So if you bring a new to Kula friend or lover, there will be something for everyone). If the tide is right, we'll get in a second surf session—sunset paddle anyone?—and if not, there will be extra time to hike, rappel a waterfall, kayak, or paddleboard.

And if your shoulders are already sore just reading this, don't worry—there's a pina colada and a hammock with your name on it.

A little about the surf: This is one of the warmest, most pristine spots in Central America. It's a perfect place both for newbies to learn to surf and for experienced surfers to rip it up without any agro locals dropping in on them. The private beach break at Boca Sombrero is ideal for beginner and intermediate level surfers. No rocks! (A few miles away is Matapalo—a world class point break). If you're not a surfer—and determined not to be converted during our week together—you'll have plenty to keep you busy. Besides the copious yoga, near the retreat center you will discover waterfalls, gorgeous hiking trails, and tide pools. And we can all meet up at the sweetest bar south of the border.

Flights:
One flight to SJO (San Jose, Costa Rica)
Connecting flight to Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica.

We recommend using
Sansa for the connecting flight.
You need 2 hours between flights to make the connection.
Therefore: plan to land in San Jose before 12 noon if you want to make the trip in one day. Otherwise we can suggest hotels for an overnight in San Jose.
Please do not book an international flight without first looking over the local flight options to Puerto Jimenez the day you wish to connect.

Here is a quick hit list of what to keep in mind prior to travel to Costa Rica (current as of October 1, 2021):

1.) Vaccinated travelers with their CDC cards do not need to present a Covid test or any special insurance to enter Costa Rica. Vaccination is not required for entry to Costa Rica; however, it is required for this retreat out of respect for those who live and work at Boca Sombrero, our colleagues and friends for 20+ years. Thank you for respecting this policy.

2). Within 48 hours of your departure flight to Costa Rica, you need to fill out a Costa Rica Health Pass. This takes less than 5 minutes.

3.) Returning to the US, as of the time of writing. You will need a negative Covid test taken within 24 hours of your return flight.

We used
LAB ECHANDI recently in San Jose and had an excellent experience. They have 26 locations around San Jose and you should book in advance online. THEY ALSO HAVE A LOCATION AT San Jose (SJO) AIRPORT. As of the time of this writing, EITHER a PCR or rapid viral antigen test is sufficient to re-enter the US, so choose the option that works best for you. We recommend the rapid viral antigen as it's cheaper and the results are generally available faster.

We recommend making an appointment 4 hours prior to your return flight to the US at the Lab Echandi location at SJO.
